It is the most important museum with historic and archaeological profile in Romania. It is a national museum directly subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Especially during the last decade the museum has developed considerably its research capacity, not only by archaeological excavations (scheduled and rescue ones), but also through national and international research projects. The institution is/was currently leading some national research projects (concerning the Neolithic chronology, the Roman defensive system, and multidisciplinary diagnostic of heritage objects’ provenience) or is significantly involved in others (archaeo-metallurgy, leather or paint conservation, juridical protection of the cultural heritage, archaeo-zoology and ancient anthropic environment). The specialists from MNIR are leading some major preventive archaeological projects (large scale liniar developments in conjunction with the construction of motorways in Romania, Alburnus Maior) or are involved in international cooperation in joint projects (Southern Romania Archaeological Project and Vivre au bord du Danube), as well as participate to excavation in priority archaeological sites. Some other international cooperation projects of the museum are focused on new developments and professional exchange in museology, as well as in numismatics.
