Laser-based techniques offer many unique possibilities for the examination and
conservation of artworks. The laser is a modern, highly controllable and versatile tool.
COST Action: Artwork Conservation by Laser has been set up to address challenges in three
main areas: (i) Laser systems for investigation and diagnosis; (ii) Laser systems for
real-time monitoring of environmental pollution; (iii) Laser Systems for cleaning
applications.
A very important contribution of this COST Action is to the prevention of cultural
heritage deterioration: work on developing techniques for monitoring the quality of indoor
and outdoor atmospheres is proposed in parallel with restoration and conservation work. It
is counter- productive to spend a great deal of effort in restoration and conservation
without taking action to minimise the risks of future damage to the artwork. The
partners profiles present the skills and expertise available to this COST action. |
